The machine is called a robot. The console has the surgeon in front of it.This thing removes your prostate. It is much much better than open surgery to have this done.As this way they really remove nothing but the thing actually grinds up your prostate and the cancer and sometimes your lyhnoids and sucks it all out.Which is very nerve sparing and believe me when I say you want these nerves spared(they control a very important part to a man's body).1 in 6 men will have this cancer. The whole idea here is to have yourself checked early as part of your yearly physical to tell the doctor you want to know what your PSA is.If doctors order it then the insurance company calls him and raises hell at the doctor if he orders this extra test on your blood and urine before age 50.If you requested it though then the doctor can just tell the insurance company that the patient requested it and I have not heard of to many insurance companies calling patients and raising hell(to easy to change insurance companies).I have already met two men in Lancaster who had thier prostate removed at 35.So if they would have waited to 50 it might have already spread to thier bones. You need to learn to help your doctor with your health in this regard. As men what commonly happens to us is this.We get prostate cancer no problem we are tough. So it spreads to our bones. No problem we are tough. All of a sudden we are sitting at the kitchen table wondering how we are going to get to work. How are we going to get home. What happens if the little lady asks us to take out the trash after work. What will we do we are in so much pain.So about then we have a heart attack and die. They come and check sure enough we died of a heart attack. No problem.Write it down.Case closed.Your PSA is what docors can use to hopefully catch this cancer inside your prostate. Then your cancer can be treated with what they call seeds of iodine by injecting them inside the prostate.BIG WORD HERE INJECT with a big needle.Once the cancer is on the outside of the prostate then they have to remove it and everything the cancer has touched.Your cord is then cut at the prostate.Doctors will not tell you that then you will be sterile but what they will tell you is that if you want anymore children go to the sperm bank before coming back.Do not think your good health is going to help you either. From what the cancer societies and surgeons have told me that they are rather certain this cancer likes testostorene.Big thing here is gentlemen&ladies. The insurance companies say have your PSA checked at age 50.Which most doctors have to go by unless you interevene. The cancer societies say you should have your PSA checked at age 30.Martin Sharret says if you are 18 and have been active why not have it checked. They are going to take the blood and urine anyhow so it is just one more test on the stuff they already have.Does not effect our copay as we are already there. To me so what if it costs them $5005 instead of $5000.I only care about all of you.God bless Martin One more thing here 95% of tetosterone comes from the testicles. The other 5% comes from the prostate.I never knew that before then it is sperm

Glad you are feeling well enough to make this long post. My dad had symptoms of prostate cancer when he was in early 70's and put off going to even find out, because he figured he'd never live long enough for it to be a problem. When he was nearly 80, he had to have it removed, and the surgery would have been much easier on him if done when he was younger and when the cancer was smaller.

He lived into his 90's, and had no re-occurrence. I wish the same for you.

Thanks MLawson:I think it is all about your PSA if you are at a certain age and your PSA is just getting to 4 at age 70 I think they donot suggest much treatment at age 70 0r 75.Normal PSA is .2 Sounds to me like if he would have had it treated at 70 he could have had the seeds though.Alot less on a person to just get the needle and have the seeds fight the cancer inside your prostate.Just think of the guys who had thier's removed at 35.They have found out alot about this cancer though in the last 10 years.I bet those guys who had thier's removed at 35 wish they had thier PSA checked starting at 25.Only way they found out at 35 they had older family members that had it and were told to get thier PSA checked. You have to push your doctor to have this done. All the research I did through the cancer agencies. My doctor was very glad of.In fact his exact words to me was"You have been doing your homework"with a big grin on his face. All doctor's I have run into do not look at it as if you are stepping on thier toes. They seem to like you knowlegible about it.I am just trying to save men's lives. So it really does not matter to me if I go through some pain doing it.Someone asked what that machine was I answered the best I could.Believe it or not MLawson every man on this forum NEEDS to read this.We all might keel over from heart attacks but alot of those heart attacks start years and years earlier at a place we donot know we even had.At least I did not know I had one.And I surely did not know it supplied 5% of my good stuff.I think as men we think the testicles is all there is.That is very wrong. Is that your real picture? And if you ever get a chance please suggest to any man that you would like to try to keep alive to read that post.Or better still contact the American Cancer Society or You Too or Cancert Care I have read all thier stuff.Alot of it is repititious. And worst part I am old and donot remember everything. But I do remember some things.like impudence which men can avoid.GET YOUR PSA checked. And yes sometimes we still live if you want to call it that.Get you PSA checked guys. You will be glad you did.Noone wants to be like me.This is not funny.I just want my fellow brothers out there somewhere to have some kind of quality of life.AMEN Martin Sharrett

First Martin: I wish you the very best recovery and THANK YOU for sharing this medical advantage with the forum.

I've read of great improvement in surgical procedures in recent years. Numerous surgeries can now be done, under certain circumstances, without slicing open delicate tissues.
The cures are better, the recovery easier, and infection kept to a minimum too.
what great advantage that is to know.

I'm praying for some easier diagnosis and earlier treatment options for ovarian cancers. It's a killer, hard to diagnose until too far gone, and/or misdiagnosed.

The tests given to help are not really that definitive, and it can hit any age.
I'd like to be wrong about that, but it's what I read and hear from patients.

Carry on..God bless.

ninagay:I have no doubt of the truth and sincerity in your words.I can only pray that my loving Lord Jesus will soon bring understanding&wisdom to someone that a woman's life does not have to be in such fear of these things. As what you have said it is also true with men.It is very hard to diagnose prostate cancer when it is still in the prostate. For one it cannot be felt by examination. That is why this PSA thing is so important. This usally leads to something. It is riducolous that insurance companies say a man's PSA does not need checked till he is 50 when I know of two men in the cancer group here who had to have thiers removed at 35.Surely soon a lady will be able to have some kind of test from somewhere to help in earlier diagnosis. This is a major key to cancer is early finding it and where.I am sure no matter man or woman that having cancer shows up somewhere in our bodies. Now to just pray that God will let someone know where.God bless and THANKYOU,Martin

My dad got tested every year for this. He described how his doctor checked him out to me... not pretty!
It was not until he was 83 that he got a horrible swelling and had to have emergency surgery. This was just one of the surgeries he had in the past few months of his life. He was in so much pain, he finally gave up, asked to be put on morphine and lived just 12 more days. That was this past summer.

I'm so sorry for your loss. It's still recent and raw.
