Flat Panel Display - By Kris HudsonDenver Post Business WriterWASHINGTON - Charlie Ergen rarely picks a small fight.Ergen's EchoStar Communications Corp., which delivers satellite TV to9 million subscribers under the Dish Network brand, has taken on CBSparent Viacom in a bitter legal battle. On Thursday, Ergen accused Viacom of "extortion at the highestlevel." He claims that for EchoStar to carry CBS, Viacom ispressuring EchoStar to pay for and carry many other Viacom-ownedchannels. Viacom has declined to comment.Midnight Monday is the deadline for expiration of an injunction thatbars Viacom from pulling its channels off Dish Network. If Viacompulls the plug, Dish viewers could be missing 20 channels, includingCBS, MTV, VH1 and Nickelodeon. The uncertainty has trimmed EchoStar's stock price, which closedFriday at $34.55, down 4 percent. An even bigger strategic issue looms for the company Ergen co-foundedin Colorado two decades ago. EchoStar, based in Douglas County, mayneed to find a merger or acquisition partner as programming anddistribution companies merge into bigger and bigger entities.http://www.denverpost.com/Stories/0,1413,36~33~1999715,00.html[TELECOM Digest Editor's Note: So this explains why so many shows onTV Land (Channel 56 on our local cable (Cable One) have had subscripts or'ticker messages' running over and over through the shows askingpeople to call Viacom and raise hell about it. This morning on 'I LoveLucy' at 10:00 AM followed by 'Leave it to Beaver' at 10:30 every fiveminutes more or less a little message on the screen said 'DISH Networkwill be dropping this show unless you call (some 800 number) and tellthem to leave the programs alone.' I get it from cable, but I supposecable gets it from satellite. That's been going on now for severaldays. They always begin these 'ticker messages' scrolling on thebottom of the screen with a little beep tone and in large letters theword EMERGENCY MESSAGE FROM YOUR OPERATOR! ('your operator' is ageneric term I guess). The first time I heard that tone and saw the'emergency message' come scrolling across the screen my thought wasmaybe there is some bad weather (tornado, etc) coming since that isthe way City of Independence lets us know about trouble; that andblowing the loud horn on top of city hall; they take over the cable tomake their announcements. Then the 'Emergency Message' was that DISHis going to lose a lot of channels and shows. PAT]
