Dr. Kamel is a former member of theInternet Society Board of Trustees, a former ISOC Vice President ofChapters, and a co-founder of the Internet Society of Egypt (theEgyptian ISOC chapter)."Tarek Kamel is one of the Internet Society's most dedicated andtalented members. During his long-standing involvement with ISOC hehas been extremely active in encouraging the development of theInternet in his country and throughout the African continent. We aredelighted with his latest appointment and are certain that Egypt willcontinue to benefit greatly from his vision and commitment toextending the Internet's reach -- we wish him much success in this newposition," said Lynn St. Amour, President and CEO of the InternetSociety.As an early graduate of ISOC's Network Training Workshops, Dr. Kamelwent on to organise technical training workshops in Africa. Hisextensive experience includes membership of the AfriNIC board and themanagement of the main Egyptian Internet gateway, servicing over 40commercial ISPs and hundreds of government organisations. He alsoworked on liberalisation issues such as obtaining a tax reduction forISPs as well as setting up a government/private sector partnership toserve the Egyptian Internet community.His work in developing countries has also included participation inthe establishment of community centers to bring the Internet to remoteareas of Egypt as well as the organisation of African symposia duringthe Internet Society's annual INET conferences. Dr. Kamel is anAssociate Professor at Egypt's Electronics Research Institute(ERI).
