ISP Information:
A packet is a self-contained bundle of data sent over a packet switching network. Packets are typically less than 1500 bytes in size. Longer files are broken into multiple packets for transmission and reassembled at the other end. A packet includes a header with to and from addresses, relation to other packets (sequencing), and error checking information. On the Internet, datagram is a synonym for packet. See TCP/IP. packet - By JOHN MARKOFFMOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Sept. 19 - Written off lately by the computerindustry as a has-been, Sun Microsystems may still have a few tricksup its engineers' shirt sleeves. On Tuesday, Sun researchers plan to report that they have discovered away to transmit data inside a computer much more quickly than currenttechniques allow. By placing the edge of one chip directly in contactwith its neighbor, it may be possible to move data 60 to 100 times asfast as the present top speeds. For the computer industry, the advance - if it can be repeated on theassembly line - would be truly revolutionary. It would make obsoletethe traditional circuit board constructed of tiny bits of solderedwires between chips, familiar to hobbyists who hand-solderedconnections when assembling Heathkit electronic projects.http://www.nytimes.com/2003/09/22/technology/22SUN.html
