The ability of a firewall to retain "state" information about ongoing network sessions. When a packet goes out through a stateful firewall (TCP/UDP/ICMP) it will only permit expected return traffic that would normally be returned in response to that packet from the remote site. This prevents spoofed packet attacks and other nasty things.
