Originally designed to initiate, terminate, route, and manage Time Division Multiplexed (TDM) voice calls, COstoday handle an ever-growing amount of data traffic. At the same time, many TDM voice users are migrating to wireless voice, either for costor convenience. While data traffic grows at double- and triple-digitrates on most carrier networks, the growth of TDM voice traffic isstagnating. This change in network traffic has resulted in a fundamental shiftwithin the telecom industry to migrate from Class 5 telephony switchesto next-generation IP-based softswitching. Service providers andcarriers around the world have already announced plans to adoptsoftswitching as the foundation for their CO infrastructure movingforward.Verizon recently made public a five-year plan to migrate its legacyswitching architecture to IP-based softswitch technology, with plansto spend more than $3 billion to expand its broadband service capacityto be able to support VoIP services for both businesses andconsumers. Analyst firm Infonetics Research reports that softswitchrevenues will grow approximately 50% in 2004.Full story at:http://www.convergedigest.com/blueprint/ttp04/z2utstar1.asp?ID=135&ctgy=2
