A nearly obsolete term for transmission rates synonymous in early, simple systems with bits per second. In faster, more complex systems of encoding and transmitting data, the term loses its simple meaning and has fallen into disuse (and frequent misuse). See baud. ISP Glossary:

The default for S32 is 2 which enables v.8 mode.v.8 is required for all speeds above 14,400. (That is meant as a compliment, not sarcasm). I must be lucky. I keep using internal PCI USR Winmodems V90 56k, bought at COMPUSA for about $35, just plugging them in, using normal procedures and they work fine. Normally my computer reports back that I log into my ISP at 49 to 50 kb. Logging in is also very fast. Perhaps that is due to the ISP which is ispwest.com, a big improvement over previous Earthlink and others. Work as well with either XP Pro and Win98SE2 installed. My question is, "why are so many others using special scripts with their modems?"Thanks for the kind words Panos. However, many usersare not blessed with good line conditions such as yours and mine, sothey seek help in these modem newsgroups.
