This slot accepts a PGA chip. A form of chip with a group of pins in concentric rectangles, designed to fit into a PGA slot. x86-compatible chips that fit into socket 7, socket 370, and Super 7 are designed in this format, as are newer sockets such as AMD's Socket A and Intel's Socket 423 and 478 for its Pentium 4 chips.

Do you know any contact information for the person who developed the software (name, place of residence, new employer)? Do you have any programmers on payroll who can do this work for you?If it's a straightforward crc or checksum it can probably be solvedfrom the data provided, without needing to resort to more timeconsuming traditional reverse engineering methods, but the "challenge"angle makes me yawn.
