This phrase was coined by the creators of the Network Computer (NC) to describe the benefits of using a system that is more mainframe and less client/server. Their logic states that NCs, although they may cost the same up front as cheap PCs, have a lower TCO than a network built on PCs.

It already has 96,000 users through word of mouth andlimited media exposure since the product was trialled six monthsago. It is adding new users at a rate of 1000 a day, according tochief executive Michael Carew.While the internet phone system is not new, what appears to be makingFreshtel's Firefly "softphone", short for software telephone,attractive is that you don't sound like a Dalek when you speak throughit -- it's as clear as a bell -- and it's a doddle to set up andactivate.Independent telecommunications consultant Paul Budde said he believesthe underlying technology, called voice over internet protocol (VoIP),is the way of the future."The technology has come to maturity," he said.
