Hexadecimal - bgold@nyx.net (Barry Gold) wrote in message news:<1066664065.930911@irys.nyx.net>... About the only time it matters is if the business goes down the tubes. Doesn't matter if they started out with a bad business model, or some new competition came in and squeezed them out, or whatever. Then some suppliers, landlords, etc., maybe even employees, will probably get 10 cents on the dollar or whatever. (Note: employees come before everybody except the taxman. And the bankruptcy lawyer.)Employees are paid before tax debts. They rank only behindadministrative costs (court, trustee, lawyer) and post-petition debts. They have a priority on the first $4,650 of wages within 90 days andcontributions to benefit plans within 180 days of filing; wages orcontributions that were due earlier and went unpaid, or amountsexceeding the limit, are mere unsecured claims.Independent contractors, though, generally end up with unsecuredclaims; often they are sued by the trustee for repayment of fees thatthe trustee contends are preferences.--Not a lawyer,Chris Green
