ISP Information:

A microprocessor specifically designed for processing 3D graphics data. This term was first coined by NVIDIA to describe its GeForce 256 chip. NVIDIA justified the name by stating that its graphics chip had a similar amount of transistors as then-current CPU chips. Now GPU has become a more widely used term to describe the complex chips that power 3D graphics cards.

I didn't understand all the microsoft instructions but I did set s32=226 by running ppp manually on my freeBSD machine and it works a champ! That's cut my time to a useful connection almost in half! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Once I knew what s register, I was able to find the bit-map table in the modem's "documentation." Do I understand correctly that in addition to disabling both v.92 and v.90, s32=226 also disables x2 modulation (select models only) and enables v.8 mode whatever they are. Can you elaborate on those latter two changes? I'd like to understand more about modems. E.g., what would have happened if I had set s32=192 which would *only* have disabled v.90 and v.92?You would probably have a 14,400 connection, since you didn't enable V.8mode. (I'm getting ready for a trip and won't have time to experiment until I return so, if you know off the top of your head, I'll appreciate your comments. Is there a FAQ somewhere that may help me to understand more?)You are correct that it also disables x2, in fact it disables all 56kmodes in the USR modem. The default for S32 is 2 which enables v.8 mode.v.8 is required for all speeds above 14,400. A quick and easy way toturn the modem into a 14,400 is S32=0, so you can see, in order to getwhat you wanted (V.34) and disable all 56k speed protocols, you neededto add 2 to whatever value is required for the particular bit you wantto set.If you have your manual, you can see what I mean.S32 Conection bit mapped operations1 V.8 Call Indicate Enable2 Enable V.8 mode4 Reserved8 Disable V.34 modulation (up to 28,800)16 Disable V.34+ modulation (31,200 and 33,600)32 Disable x2 modulation (early 56k prior to V.90)64 Disable V.90 modulation (Standard 56k protocol)128 Disable V.92 modulation (Newest 56k Standard)So set the bit mapped register, just add up the values of each bit thatyou want to disable, keeping in mind that V.8 (default), must remainenabled for speeds above 14,400.Example: To disable all 56k protocols.Add bit values 128 (V.92), 64 (V.90), 32 (x2)= 224 + 2(enable V.8) = 226The reason I included x2 in the disable list, is that some ISP's using3COM Server Modems still allow x2 connections. So to avoid thatpossibility, I included x2 in the disable formula. Good luck.--Art Jackson W4TOY Owensboro, KY USALife is God's open book test.
