Homepage - RipCurl writes: Why do you think that car magazines do not give bad reviews on many cars? They lose advertisement dollars from that company. They don't give bad reviews of "many" cars because there aren'tmany cars that deserve genuinely bad reviews. But when a carcomes along that does, I haven't noticed that the larger Americancar magazines (_Road & Track_, _Automobile_, and particularly_Car And Driver_) pull their punches. Nor are they reticentabout pointing out the shortcomings of otherwise-good cars.(In the early Seventies, _Car And Driver_ actually concluded aroad test (of the Opel 1900) with a photo of the car sitting ina junkyard. GM was reportedly Not Pleased.) Why does a car magazine give Ford's Focus such glowing reviews, when on the 2000 models there were 4 recalls on it alone ( the hatchback versions ). Not to mention many performance issues. But still, they gave it the "car of the year" monicker. The sorts of defects that are addressed by recalls are generallyissues that only become apparent over time, not necessarily inthe short period during which a car is under test by a magazine. For example, _Car And Driver named the Focus the winner of itsannual 10Best Cars competition primarily because it was fun todrive and had good interior fit and finish, not because it heldup under an extended, real-world test:http://makeashorterlink.com/?R18813886(The cars that the magazines test are often press cars that getflogged pretty hard, but then, they get mechanical attention fromthe manufacturers between tests.)Geoff--"It is time we scraped the Snoop Dogg dirt of hip-hop cultureoff our nation's shoes and moved on." -- Barrett kalellis
