Some operating systems allow multiple parts, or threads, of a single process to run simultaneously. These OSes are referred to as multi-threaded. UNIX is a multi-threaded OS, as is Windows NT/2000/XP. Multi-threading was added to Linux in 1999 with kernel version 2.2, and refined more in kernel 2.4 in 2001.
