A term coined to describe the large search engine sites, such as Yahoo! and Lycos, that have branched off to offer a wide variety of services. The idea is that a Web user would peer at the Web by using only one website: the portal. For example, you go to a portal to do searches, get stock quotes, buy things, etc. It would be your everything site.
