ISP Information:
A specification originally designed to provide a simple and generic way of interfacing computers and their components.Device Bay devices are about the size of a VCR tape, and would have interfaced via USB or FireWire, making it easy to plug a new hard drive or other device into the front of your PC. However, Device Bay never took off, as it was expected in 1998 but never arrived. ISP Glossary:
Device Bay Interface Specification - This is from the VoIP Watch blog athttp://andyabramson.blogs.com/voipwatch/ . I saw the referenced storybut did not post about it here because I also felt it was wildlyslanted and inaccurate in many respects. So, I'm glad to see that I'mnot the only one who felt this way about that particular piece ofnot-so-great journalism:http://andyabramson.blogs.com/voipwatch/2004/07/cnet_takes_pstn.htmlJuly 19, 2004CNET Takes PSTN's Side on VoIPUPDATED--I don't know what it is with the folks at CNET, but it seemstheir thoroughness is somewhat lacking these days. The most recent CNET account about VoIP leaves lots of holes and really fails to tell thefacts correctly.First, all PVRs are not Tivo's and thus some, like Reply havebroadband access to the program and channel guides. While the reportdid not mention Replay, the claim that people with TIVO's can't updatetheir guides may not be 100 percent accurate. The RJ-11 connects to aninternal modem. Since a modem is able to dial a phone, and thetelephone adapters work to convert analog to digital, then it may beable to work.Second, the issue of not being listed in the phone book. My mom hasbeen unlisted for years and still has credit, gets deliveries. I'vebeen unpublished, with only my town listed. I have no problem gettingdeliveries and my mail goes to a different address and has since Iarrived in San Diego County.Lastly, the issue of power failures. Sure a PSTN line won't beeffected, but saying BPL (broadband over power lines) will not beaffected is hilarious. A power failure effects the grid, not thehouse. Maybe if the reporter was talking about a blown fuse orbreaker, but that's minor and not a brown out or black out.One of the six cannons of PR from my mentor, Sy Roseman, was alwaysknow the facts, because some reporters never let facts get in the wayof a good story. I think that happened here, and candidly, I'msurprised, because Ben Charney is usually on the mark. Maybe he wasedited poorly.UPDATE--SEEMS THE SLASHDOT CROWD -- agrees with me.
