This term comes from the days when tape media had to be physically mounted at the instruction of an operating system. The terminology is still used in UNIX/Linux environments. When the system is powered on all hard drives are normally set to mount automatically, but removable media such as CD-ROMs and floppy disks have to be manually set to be recognized by the operating system (mounted) after they are inserted into the ISP Glossary:
