ISP Information:
This term is used in the microchip manufacturing world. Companies like AMD and Intel strive for high ASPs. The ASP is an indication not only of direct profits, but how well a company is keeping up with the technology curve. It is not uncommon for Intel to have an ASP of around US$100 and AMD to be close behind. ISP Glossary:
Average Selling Price - Gee, what was that they implemented in New York City, about ten years ago? Seems to me, everyone called it a "tech overlay". But what do I know? Not much, evidently. Although 917 was originally cell phones andfaxes, it's now a mix of voice, cell, fax, data, and everything else, just like the four other NYC area codes. Tech overlays don't work, because there's no reasonable way to define what's tech and whatisn't. I also don't see any reason to believe that even if you didcome up with an arbitrary definition of "tech", that the growth intech numbers relative to voice numbers would be large enough to makegeneral purpose overlays unnecessary. Note that NYC has needed twomore area codes since 917 was opened.Had there been better planning in the past, it might have beenpossible to do what we might call asymmetric overlays. The dialingplan for all overlaid area codes would be 7D for the original code and10D for everything else. It'd cost each subscriber an extra $1/monthfor each number in the original area code (waived for the first persubscriber), thereby encouraging people to leave their main voicenumber in the original area code, and putting DID, fax, and other bulkranges elsewhere. This would work a lot better with full LNP so youdon't waste large ranges of numbers so a CLEC can have three numbersper rate center. But I suspect it's too late for that now. Irrelevant, as if it was even going to happen. Cellular and Landline companies have been thwarting number portability for years, and they will continue to do so.The portability date is now in November, and I see no evidence thatthey'll thwart it this time. At least one cell carrier (Verizon?)surprised everyone by coming out in favor of it. We have yet to be shown any reason that it is necessary, other than ranting by you and a host of tall tales from industry lobbyists.Well, if you're going to claim that everyone who disagrees with youis lying, there's not much point in arguing, is there? Sheesh.Regards,John Levine johnl@iecc.com Primary Perpetrator: "The Internet for Dummies",Information Superhighwayman wanna-be http://iecc.com/johnlSewer Commissioner"I dropped the toothpaste", said Tom, crestfallenly.
