APIs allow you to program to a pre-constructed interface (the API) instead of programming a device or piece of software directly. This allows for faster development, since programming to a device's API is designed to be easier than programming to a device directly. APIs allow you to program without having intimate knowledge of the device or software to which you are sending commands. For example, the OpenGL API allows yo ISP Glossary:
API - The fault is yours. You had insufficient funds when you wrote thechecks. That's against the law in most states. The cost of handlingthese NSF items are expensive to banks and individuals who acceptthem. Paying a collection fee is to prevent this practice and to coverthe costs of paying with a NSF check. On Wed, 01 Sep 2004 17:15:37 -0700, MM wrote:A couple unusual personal events conspired over a 1 month period to create the most outlandish bankcharges for a checking overdraft that I have ever experienced, and I am dealing w/ a bank that hasbeen unresponsive. In the middle of June, I made seperate online purchases for 5 similar items from the same co all onthe same day. The purchase was accepted, but I had NSF to cover the items and the company, aftersubmitting them twice to the bank for pmt, (w/o any notification), turned them over to theircollection agency. The collection agency proceeded to submit the 5 items seperately for pmt 2 moretime, and after they were paid, (from deposits made), they proceeded to submit 5- $25 collection feeitems seperately, for pmt. Due to being in the middle of a move, the notices were forwarded and were recieved w/ an approx 5da lag, and admittedly I was preoccupied and somewahat disoriented from relocating to a newresidence and business address, which also effected my response time. When I did catch wind of whatwas going on, I made a $400 deposit, which on that day, more than covered the overdraft. Uponreturning to the bank a couple of days later, I was stunned to find that I was overdrawn again anddeposited another $400. To make a long story short, I am still overdrawn and there have beenabsolutely no other charges that have been made w/ this account since the original 5 errant chargesof $154.80 from over 1 month ago.I have placed calls, spent the better part of today, backtracking the chronology, going through thenotices, waiting on hold, loosing connection twice, sending emails, etc, and still nothing isresolved and the final word from the supervisor on the matter is that this is not a bank error andthey cannot make any adjustments. This account was set up for the express purpose of handling online purchases and as such, Iinitially was funding it and managing it online. However, somewhat mysteriously, I have been unableto access it since the problems started to emerge, and in one of the conversations, weeks back, Igot the impression that I was being locked out of the online acct due to the account havingproblems. My explanation, that my inability to access my online account, was a bank error, fell ondeaf ears.Bottom line:$154.80 purchases (5 seperate/same co/ same day)Bank fees and charges:$870Collection agency fees:$125All in a one month period! I am literally astounded by this. I have had checking accounts for fortyyears, and as a small independent businessman, have had my ups and downs, but I have never seenanything like this! Should I just say, "Good work Wells Fargo, you stuck me good." and let it drop?Or is there any recourse in the matter. It will end up costing me over $1,000 for the $150 of goodsand, frankly, $1,000 is alot to me right now, relative to my income.
