I began smoking as an intelligent young man of12 when I realized how glamorous and sophisticated it made me appear.Some nearly fifty years later, after more than two months comotose inStormont Vail Medical Center in Topeka followed by a month of intensetherapy (three months with no cigarette at all!), the minute I firstwent out of the hospital was 'light up time' once again, just as I sithere now with a smoldering ashtray nearby.
