The slang term for an external hardware device with some memory inside it that attaches to your computer and dangles off of it (thus the term dongle). Often, companies that sell expensive software packages use dongles as proof that a computer actually has a license to use the software that is being used--the software checks to see if a dongle is installed. If not, it may refuse to run, or run with limited functionality. ISP Glossary:
