ISP Information:
A RAID 5 configuration utilizes three or more hard drives and stripes the data across them, much like RAID 0. The difference is that parity information is striped across the drives as well, so if you lose any one drive the information can be reconstructed from the parity information. For example, with three drives the first stripe is data (on drive 1), data (on drive 2), parity (on drive 3); then data, parity, data; then ISP Glossary:
RAID 5 - < Again, for those just picking up on this - I think cheap electricpower is a good thing, my learned correspondant thinks that electricityprices should be artifically increased to insure only the right sort ofpeople get to buy any electricity.>"Roland Msl" wrote in messagenews:406fac2e$0$13210$91cee783@newsreader02.highway.telekom.at... According to a Web site, it rains in most places in Austria 10-12days a month during the summer - this must make PV arrays pretty cost-intensive. The average is 1000 kWh per squaremeter and year. Germany has a law to buy energy produced by photovoltaic with 57,4 Cent per kWhDoes Germany also have a law mandating you pile all your money on theground andburn it? Paying inflated prices for energy is not virtuous. Bizzarresubsidies for un-economic technologies result in damage to an economyand eventual traumatic re-adjustment. Because I have an energy optimized housekeeping, I would have no problem to purchase my 1807 kWh per year even at this price. But some of us don't like reading by candle light and bathing in coldwater that we'vecarried up the stairs. Nor do we light only eating food that doesn'trequire refrigeration.A consumption of 1800 kwh per year per person is comparable to a ThirdWorld economy. So to have energy optimized appliances is a key factor for using renewable energy. It's a law in Europe, that any refirgerator or washing machine in a shop has to have a sign on it about the energy usage.Yes, and for years now all new appliances sold in Canada also have a(probably bogus) "Energuide" number that allegedly shows how muchelectricity will be used per year. I lead in Europe an initiartive to expand this signs to computer. This should mark current dektop computers with energy class G as bad energy wasters.Define "waste". Presumably the peeople who buy and use computers thinkthat the consumption of energy is valid. Just right now, Intel announced that energy usage is more a more a criteria also by desktop computers. Out of this reason, Intel announced to stop the fail construction Pentium 4. 2007, there will be only new CPUs based on the current Banias Pentium-M technology.Possibly...but it seems unlikely people will junk millions of perfectlygood computers just to get the current chip from Intel. This would be avery stupid economic decision since the trifling amount of electricitysaved by a new CPU cannot possibly pay for the cost of a new system. You could probably get 90% of the energy saving of a new CPU designwith no cost at all if you just reminded people to turn off theirmonitors at night or when the machine isn't being used for hours. Oneof my many pet peeves is the "screen saver" that puts some littleanimation on screen, thereby preventing the monitor from automaticallypowering down on loss of a video signal.Bill
