For the last 5 days, it's rare that I can connect with my ISP. I have win98 FE. Mostly it doesn't connect (the icon doesn't appear in the systray) and I get Error-629 You have been disconnected from the computer you dialed. OR Error-678 The computer you are dialing into doesn't answer OR Error-645 Dial-up networking could not complete the connection to the server. Check your configuration and try the connection again. Other times it connects at 19K or 28K, won't let me download mail or anything, and hangs up within 2 or 3 minutes Other times it connect at 49K or 52K and works great, but even then all but once it hung up before I was ready to, usually 10 or 20 minutes. First there is a period it doesnt' do anything. In a minute or two, a "do you want to redial" box shows up. It pauses much longer than it used to at "logging onto Network...", even when it actually connects well. Or this last time it paused a long time at "verifying username and passowrd" or words to that effect**. My ISP says it is my doing. I think it's 'cause of them. ??You have described a problem that appears to be either a modem going badora poor line with periods of decent conditions. First step is to undowhatthe ISP tech had you change. Put it back the way it was. Next step is to I will do all this. (except for one part that I don't think I can.) There were two phone calls and by the second, I remembered to write down the way it had been. (I'm slow, but I don't think I'll ever forget again.) What was changed the first time was that in Network of Control Panel (of win98) I had 6 or 7 "installed components". Two of them were -- I forget the word used in their names -- it seems 2nd copies of others on the list. She had me delete 3 items, and each time 2 or 3 items disappeared until there were none left. Then she had me install Client for Microsoft Networks, Microsoft Family Logon, Dial Up Adaptor, and TCP/IP. She said that was the ISP's standard. Then she had me create another "connection" in order to reinstall the dialer, she said. (Now it *has* worked well since then on two or three recent sessions including this one, and it also worked badly, especially early on Sunday, yesterday.) But since I didn't write down the "installed components" I deleted, I don't think I can replace them. :(This part is probably ok. But go into the properties for the dial-up iconfor the ISP and uncheck all but "TCP/IP" under Server Types. That will speedup the connection process a bit. She said "they just get there sometimes over years and it's nothing you did, and they need to be cleaned out sometimes." Sounded very sure of herself and I was convinced. She's just reading from a script. It's not true. I have not re-installedthis stuff for years and nothing gets changed or needs to be "cleaned out"(whatever that was supposed to mean). I have used one other ISP for a total of about 4 or 5 minutes over the last 4 years. It's my ex-girlfriend and I only logged on, didn't do anything but check my connection speed. Could this have automatically installed those other installed components that I removed Saturday night? No. If so, I guess I don't need them now, and they will be reinstalled automatically when needed.determine whether *any* device sharing the line with the modem is causingthe problem. Remove everything on that line except the modem, makeseveralconnection attempts. If it works good each time, replace one item at atimeuntil you find the culprit (or culprits) causing the problem. If thatdoesnot clear trouble, the problem is likely in the line. It may still be themodem, however, so trying another modem on the line would be recommended.Ido not think the problem is at your ISP *unless* the problem happens onlyatcerta
