"Woodchuck" wrote in message news:3f5e7779$0$65927$4d5ecec7@reader.city-net.com... Got a quick question and since you are the resident modem guru I ask you this? My connection speeds have dropped over the last years due to the phone company installing more and more second lines in my area and notupgrading their equipment. Phone company has even replaced my lines from house to their box and I have all new high quality phone cable within the house. As little as 3 years ago my speeds would average 38-42 but as low as 36 or less. I have used the USR sportster 5686(white external) but was getting constant hang-ups so I switched to a Courier external which the best it connects is 28.8 but have stable connections. My ISP uses USR V.90modems. The question is do you thing I would see any improvements if I installthe USR upgrade V.92 to my Courier... or should I just leave it as is? If you are saying that no modem gets better than 28.8k connects on yourline these days then the odds are that the telco installed either a universalSLC or added pairgain type systems to the lines in your neighborhood and onyour line. In either case, the problem is the same: introducing additional analog/digital conversions into the circuit. You will not see any improvements by upgrading to V.92 since you aren't capable of getting V.90 and V.92 hasthe same basic requirement: one, and only one, analog/digital conversion inthe circuit. We can probably confirm that you have multiple A/D points by examining the results of an aty11 query. Perform the query after disconnecting from an online session. In fact, query the modem with ati6i11y11 and post the results here. If you get no data as a result of the query, you will needto either edit your Registry, locating the ATZ and replacing it with AT&F1for the USR modem(s) or just manually dial the ISP number from Hyperterminal (ATDTxxxxxxx) and disconnecting before sending the query. -- Hooda Gest "The only thing I do immediately is procrastinate."
