I'm sure there areplenty of locations where there isn't an equivalent store that matchesthem for variety, just as there are undoubtedly plenty of individualstores that compete on some basis (as an odd quirk the walmart builtnear me has a Payless shoe store right next to it and the whole buildingwas built from scratch by tearing down an old strip mall that didn'thave a payless. don't know if they are profitable, but they are there.)Why is it possible for such a thing to happen? I don't think they paytheir employees enough to actually have much disposable income andWalmart doesn't for the most part buy anything local so they aren'treally adding anything except tax revenue to the area. At some pointthose businesses that compete won't be able to and will quit. Lack ofCompetition. How is it you can't imagine they'd never be in a position lackingcompetition? Because that's how the free market works.tell that to microsoft. You still have other choices - Unix, Linux, Mac, Solaris... that's how the free market works.but you have (or at least had) to pay the license fee for windoze. Ofcourse that free market sure worked pretty well with windozeincorporating ie into its OS. or maybe their recent settlement withOpera over interoperability issues is how the free market works.
