Graphical User Interface. Pronounced "gooey". An operating system interace between the user and the computer based on graphics. GUIs typically use a mouse or other tracking device and icons. First developed by XEROX as an easier to learn interface than text-based ones, it was adopted by Apple for the Macintosh, Microsoft for Windows, and even for unix systems as XWindows. ISP Glossary:

The money would be usedto expand Bell's DSL footprint into rural and remote areas of Ontarioand Quebec that are unlikely to otherwise obtain high-speed broadbandconnectivity.www.crtc.gc.ca/PartVII/eng/2003/8678/b2_200318049.htm** In a series of press interviews last week, BCE CEOMichael Sabia urged the federal government to launch acomprehensive review of telecom policy and regulation.TELUS QUEBEC BOOSTS DARK FIBRE RATES 900%: On November 27, TelusQuebec refiled its proposed tariffs for dark fibre. The rates in thenew version are approximately ten times those the company proposed inOctober, but they are still less than half of the amounts proposed byBell Canada. (See Telecom Update #405 and the editorial in the currentissue of Telemanagement.)WIRELESS NUMBER PORTABILITY NOT GLITCH-FREE: It was, to say the least,premature for us to say that the first week of wireless numberportability in the U.S. was "relatively glitch-free" (see TelecomUpdate #410). In fact, so far the automated transfer system has failedto process about 50% of all orders, forcing manual data entry. Numbertransfers, which are supposed to take 2.5 hours, often take days.** Initial estimates say that in the first week about 80,000customers a day sought to move their numbers.ROGERS WIRELESS TO DROP AT&T NAME: Rogers Wireless says it will dropAT&T from its name by mid-2004. Rogers adopted the AT&T brand in 1996;AT&T Wireless holds a 33% stake in the Canadian cellco.ALLSTREAM OFFERS REDUNDANT INTERNET LINK: Allstream now offers HighAvailability Internet Access, which provides both a primary and asecondary access connection to the Internet, backed by a 99.95% uptimeguarantee. If the main connection fails, the back-up link isautomatically initiated.TELUS CLAIMS SERVICE IMPROVEMENTS: Telus says it has turned the corneron its service problems. By the end of November it was answering 80%of customer service and repair calls within 20 seconds, as required bythe CRTC. The Commission received 1,382 customer complaints aboutTelus in November, compared to 2,690 in October.CRTC READY TO REVIEW MUNICIPAL ACCESS AGREEMENTS: The CRTC says itcannot order a blanket revision to all existing municipal accessagreements between cities and carriers to bring them into agreementwith "Ledcor Decision" principles.
