Active Template Library - VOIP phones in general, but specifically Vonage, since they are theleaders in that area at present, were the topic of discussion Fridaynight news at 9 PM on KOKI, Channel 23, Fox in Tulsa. The Fox reportsaid that indeed, 'full phone service' (meaning all the bells ahdwhistles on local and long distance service) was much less expensiveon Vonage than SBC (the local telco of record in Tulsa) or variousother CLECs. They quoted a typical price for SBC 'full service' of $53per month versus the $35 or so from Vonage. But, they pointed out the one major (for many people) problem withVOIP was that E-911 was unreliable or non-existent. They did admit that'for those folks who rarely if ever travel out of the area or take theircomputer along, this poses little or no problems, since the SafetyPoint of Presence (?) system used by Vonage and other VOIPs isreasonably accurate.' Fox got their terms wrong a little bit, but theidea is mostly accurate. For example, take my situation: I cannotpercieve a time when I would travel somewhere and want to take alongthe ATA box *and* need to use 911 at the distant location. So itall works pretty well for me. However Fox had a demonstration of someonemaking a 'test call' on their Vonage to the 911 center; somethingthat Vonage strongly discourages doing.Fox also noted that 'as SBC continues to price itself out of the marketfor so many Tulsa residents, Vonage begins looking more and more likea good alternative for many folks.'To try a month of Vonage free, ask for an e-coupon and see if it workswell for you also. ptownson@telecom-digest.orgPatrick Townson
