ISP Information:
A multiprocessing architecture where each processor or small group of processors has its own group of memory chips. Accessing memory local to the processor is faster than accessing remote memory on other processor boards. NUMA typically scales better than SMP architectures, where memory is all accessed at the same speed in one large bank. ISP Glossary:
NUMA - Phil P. wrote: I'm trying to determine if Sysmon counts 1K as 1024 or 1000 when reporting on dial-up speed and throughput. Having searching Google Groups for this subject in this newsgroup, I find some regular participant claim it's 1024, not 1000. But there is something I don't understand when reading an old messages posted by an old hand here, in which he says: "SYSMON for some reason known only to Microsoft counts in "binary thousands" - there are 1024 bits to a "binary 1k". So, (49333/1024)*1000 = 48176.75 which SYSMON "rounds" to 48.1." In the equation he gives, 49333 is the modem connect speed. My question is, "In that equation, after dividing 49333 by 1024, why further multiply the result by 1000?" If the result of "49333/1024" is further multiplied by 1000 and then rounded, Sysmon should be said to treat 1K as 1000, right? Isn't that somewhat contradictory? Can someone please shed light on that? TIAIt's immaterial, since you have no way of knowing how much errorcorrection and compression is taking place from modem to modem. Sysmondoes not see that. Then there's also software compression to consider. The only true measure of overall connection speed performance is actualthroughput. As a general rule of thumb, a good error free connectionwill produce throughput of modem speed/9 =KBps on highly compressed datasuch as a .zip file. Uncompressed text files can and do providethroughputs of 2-3 times that of compressed files. Also another thing toconsider is that the displayed modem connect speed, only indicates whatthe modem connected at. 56K modems can and do adjust up and down duringthe course of the connection period.
