My mattress is a platform typeconsisting of a good-quality innerspring combo mattress/boxspring in one housing. It uses the same concept of an expensivecoil spring mattress design in which there are lots of smallcoils butted up against each other sideways. Atop this is a layerof regular foam, good quality, maybe 2 inches thick. The fabriccover has a zipper around its entirety, which allows the foamslab to be replaced when worn out and/or changed for a firmer orsofter foam. It isn't "memory foam." The entire contraptio, themattress, is thick: about 12-24" high, so finding an appropriatefitted bottom sheet is a little tricky. However, they do exist(waterbed sheets). This is the best bed I've ever owned. I've been using it for thelast 12 years without any changes. The price was reasonable, Irecall $700, including the platform with its six drawers.Unfortunately, the small manufacturer in Berkeley, California, has moved onto another trendy "European" slat-based bed conceptand abandoned this good product. A foam shop has taken over thesupply of spec replacement foam slabs, although I don't thinkI'll need any for a few more years. I think that the "secretingredient" in this bed is simply the zippered mattress cover.Even with its junky nylon monofilament fishing line thread, ithas still held up nicely. I had the store owner over for awarranty issue involving the base and I recall that I harranguedhim over some crappy cost-shaving of the drawer hardware and thethread. Nonetheless, it's been perhaps the best purchase of mylife.I think that your idea is every bit as good. Initially, a memoryfoam mattress feels incredibly wonderful (I have a Wonderfoampillow; I don't use it much--it compresses too much). I'm notsure how good it would feel in daily use, however. The essentialrequirement of your bed is an extremely firm base (the underlyingmattress) for good support. And you want to somehow secure thefoam top so that it and you don't keep sliding onto the floor.Richard
