In a redundant system, if you lose part of the system, you can continue to operate. For example, if you have two power supplies and one takes over if the other one dies, that is a form of redundancy. You can take redundancy to extreme levels, but you spend more money. Redundancy is one reason that high-end server machines cost 10 times more than desktop PCs.
