ISP Glossary:

listserv - I didn't want TWC's roadrunner, so I got Earthlink instead. It was thesame connection and everything but less cost. If your paying $100 forjust cable modem access your paying WAY too much. I pay less thanthat for my internet and my digital cable package. (Upside it allcomes in on one bill). Satellite is only good as a last resort. Cablemodem and DSL are much better. I actually get great performance(1000kbs) from my cable modem (pay for 386kbs)as most of my neighborsare all on DSL. :-)"Mike Hedgepath" wrote in message news:<0005c.32260$xL3.31083@bignews1.bellsouth.net>... Josh, My own experience with DirecPC was not favorable. I'll spare you the aggravating details and sum it all up by saying that an internet link via satellite should be a last resort. DSL is what I have now, and is far superior to a satellite return link. Friends with internet via cable are satisfied as well. I have no personal experience with internet via cable. Bottom line is go with DirecPC or Starband, ONLY if you can't get cable or DSL. Even then, you may find as I did that the fair use policy(DirecPC) will choke your bandwidth to a point that it will cause you to terminate the satellite link and use a dial-up connection. It can be that bad! If I lived in a remote area I'd be delighted to access the net via any means available including a satellite link. Consider the equipment costs as well. I got my DirecDuo elliptical dish and hardware at a "going out of business" retailer in late '97 for ~$300. Monthly service was $35. DSL providers generally send you a "modem"(not really a modem) and everything else you need in a kit that will get you online in about 30 minutes. A cable modem(again, not really a modem) can be bought off the shelf at many PC outlets. I think most cable companies will send a rep and do the install. Service commitments vary, but even if you decide to bail it won't hurt financially as bad as a satellite setup. The money you save could surely be better used entertaining a coed or two, or three, or.......? Good luck MH
