Someone who seeks to understand computer, phone, or other systems strictly for the satisfaction of having that knowledge. Hackers wonder how things work, and have an incredible curiosity. Hackers will sometimes do questionable legal things, such as breaking into systems, but they generally will not cause harm once they break in. Contrast a hacker to the term cracker or malicious hacker. ISP Glossary:
Hacker - Tests higher-cost plans that offer moreBy Peter J. Howe, Globe Staff, 7/21/2003PHILADELPHIA -- As broadband service providers work to sustain boomingsales for high-speed Internet access, some, like VerizonCommunications Inc., are cutting rates to as low as $30 a month.Others, including several US and Canadian cable companies and BellSouth, have moved to 'tiered' plans that offer lower prices -- butwith somewhat slower download speeds than current services.Comcast Corp., however, is looking only upward in its tieringstrategy. In what could be a glimpse of its future broadband offers inNew England, Comcast is currently testing in New Haven, Conn., a$65-a-month plan -- about $20 more than its standard residentialbroadband plan -- that offers faster downloads through a device thatalso lets users connect several computers through wireless and cableconnections to their broadband cable modem connection. An even faster$95 plan is also in the works.Comcast has moved in recent weeks to fend off Verizon's price cuts fordigital subscriber line broadband with plans as low as $20 a month forsix months before they revert to the standard $43 rate in a bundlewith cable television. But company officials contend that is strictlya standard 'Dads and Grads' promotion keyed to the Father's Day andcollege graduation season, and Comcast has no interest in getting intoa sustained race to the bottom for broadband pricing.http://www.boston.com/dailyglobe2/202/business/Firm_doesn_t_follow_rivals_lead_on_pricing+.shtml
