People In This State Bought More Than 4 Million Guns
Douglas A. McIntyre 19 mins ago

U.S. gun sales in the first four months of 2021 surged 31% to 15,966,389. This makes it among the largest figures since sales started to be recorded in 1998.

The increase is part of a trend. Gun sales in the United States rose 40% last year to 39,695,315. That represents the high water mark in annual gun sales since the current record-keeping system went into effect. Increases by state in April and for the first four months varied substantially, as has been the case for years.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation tracks gun sales and publishes a list of how many are handled as part of its National Instant Criminal Background Check System. Each month, the figures are reported by state. Nearly everyone put through this system qualifies as a buyer. People who are excluded usually have criminal records. Of the more than 310 million checks that have been done since 1998, there have only been 1.5 million denials. Therefore, the data is the best proxy for U.S. gun sales available.

Growing civil unrest may have prompted people to buy guns for personal and family protection, many social scientists have posited, although this remains a matter of debate. Another theory is that chaos brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic is a major cause. A new UC Davis School of Medicine study about fear of violence reports: “The coronavirus pandemic has exacerbated persistent structural, economic, and social inequities in the conditions that contribute to violence and its consequences.”

Who bought these guns? CBS News pointed out that over 5 million people were first-time gun buyers last year. CNN reported a sharp rise in sales to Black Americans and women. “Sales to women are also up 40% through September when compared with the same period last year,” the news network pointed out.

The increases in April and first four months should not be taken as unusual, nor should the rise in gun sales from 2019 to 2020 be viewed as an anomaly. The number of gun sales has increased most years since 1999. Sales first topped 25 million in 2016, 20 million in 2013, 15 million in 2011 and 10 million in 2006. In 1999, the first full year the FBI kept data, sales totaled 9,138,123.

The state with the most gun sales through the first four months was Illinois at 4,287,494. The state has only 4% of the population but accounted for 27% of gun sales for the period.

Chicago weekend violence: 6 killed, including 13-year-old boy, 28 people wounded in shootings
There have been at least 195 murders and 865 shootings year-to-date, police say
By Stephanie Pagones | Fox News

Gun violence in Chicago soars during first four months of 2021
Fox News contributor Lawrence Jones hears from residents of the Windy City impacted by the shootings.

Six people were killed in Chicago over the weekend, including a 13-year-old who was discovered with a gunshot wound to his abdomen, authorities said Monday.

The teenager was found at approximately 9:30 p.m. on Saturday on South Springfield Avenue in the Harrison neighborhood of Chicago, police said. But by the time officers go to him, he was unable to provide details about his attacker, according to police. The gunman has not yet been caught.

The victim, identified by the Chicago Sun-Times as Eddie Thigpen, was a freshman at North Lawndale College Prep, the high school confirmed in a Monday morning post on its Facebook page.

The Chicago Police Department said 28 people were wounded in as many shootings from 6 p.m. Friday to 11:59 p.m. Sunday. In addition to Thigpen, the other murder victims ranged in age from 23 to 36, police said.

Police said the surviving wounded victims were between the ages of 17 and 62.

There was less bloodshed than during the previous weekend, when people said 46 people were shot and seven were murdered.

A 2-year-old boy was shot Tuesday while riding in a car during a road rage incident, Chicago police said.

Most recently available crime statistics show that murder was up 56% from April 26 to May 2 compared to the same time last year, CPD said. The number of shooting incidents was also up 40% during the same time frame year-over-year, police said.

Police statistics show there were 195 murders and 865 shootings year-to-date as of May 2, up from the 160 murders and 650 shootings reported by the same time in 2020.

Nine people were injured, three critically, in a drive-by shooting Thursday evening in Providence, Rhode Island.

The drive-by shooting happened around 7 PM in Providence’s Washington Park neighborhood and there was return fire from the house to the vehicles.

Providence Police Chief Hugh Clements said the victims are all between 19 and 25.

The shooting was not random and the police chief said the department is familiar with the “groups” involved.

The suspects are still at large according to Clements.

The police chief emphasized there is a “gun problem” on the streets rather than admitting there is a gang problem. Figures.

Employees among 'multiple casualties' in shooting at San Jose rail yard, sheriff says
David K. Li and Matthew Mulligan 14 mins ago

Gunfire erupted at a Northern California rail yard on Wednesday, leading to "multiple fatalities" of public transit workers before the suspected shooter died, authorities said.

Calls of shots fired came about 6:34 a.m. PT near 100 W. Younger Ave. in San Jose, drawing a large law enforcement response, the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office said.

"There are multiple injuries and multiple fatalities in this case," sheriff's spokesman Russell Davis told reporters at the scene. “The suspect is confirmed deceased."

Davis did not say how the shooter died or specify the number injured and dead.

Citing an "active shooter," deputies told the public at 7:12 a.m. PT to steer clear of the downtown San Jose neighborhood, about 50 miles south of downtown San Francisco.

Less than an hour later, the sheriff's department reported the shooter was down.

"Our hearts are pained for the families of those we have lost in this horrific shooting," San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo said in a statement. "The shooter is deceased, and more information will be provided."

The Younger Avenue address is a light rail yard of the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA), which provides rail, bus and various shuttle services to the booming Bay Area suburb and technology hub.

Davis called the shooting scene a VTA "control center" which is a "hub that stores multiple VTA trains and a maintenance yard as well."

The area is also in the center of regional law enforcement operations, as the rail yard is within a half-mile of San Jose Police Department, Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office and District Attorney headquarters.

Two people are dead and more than 20 others were injured in a mass shooting early Sunday, Miami-Dade Police Department said.

According to reports, three people got out of a white Nissan Pathfinder and began shooting into a crowd of people who were standing outside of a “scheduled event” on 186th Street.

Law enforcement officials are still searching for the shooters.

Miami-Dade Police Department Director Freddy Ramirez said the shooting was a targeted attack.

NBC Miami reported:

Two people were killed and more than 20 people were injured in what police called a “targeted and cowardly act” early Sunday morning outside a Northwest Miami-Dade banquet hall.

The shooting took place just after 12:30 a.m. at a release party for local rap artist at the El Mula banquet hall, located at 7630 Northwest 186th Street.

Miami-Dade Police Department Director Freddy Ramirez said as many as eight people were transported to hospitals in both Miami-Dade and Broward counties while 12 others drove themselves to the hospital. At least one victim is reportedly in critical condition.

This marks the second mass shooting in South Florida on Memorial Day weekend.

Three dead, including corrections officer, in Miami shooting at graduation party
KATE FELDMAN 37 mins ago

At least three people were killed early Sunday morning in Miami as they were leaving a graduation party at a hookah lounge.

Around 2 a.m., as the party was breaking up, two cars pulled up in the Kendall strip mall parking lot and someone inside began shooting at the departing guests, according to Miami-Dade Police Director Freddy Ramirez.

Two of the people who died were in a car that crashed into a wall at Miami Dade College’s Kendall campus while trying to flee the scene, Ramirez said.

A third victim, a Florida corrections officer, died at the hospital. It’s unclear which facility she worked at.

Six others were injured in the shooting.

Police have not publicly identified any of the victims.

“We all have to band together. This violence has to stop,” Ramirez said at a press conference Sunday morning. “And this is extremely frustrating. Every weekend is the same thing.”

Police are still searching for both cars, a dark-colored Chevy Malibu and a white Toyota Camry.

Anyone with further information is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471music477.

The deadly shooting comes exactly a week after three people were killed and at least 20 others injured in a shooting outside a Hialeah banquet hall.

Violent weekend: Mass shootings in 3 states leave 2 dead, at least 30 wounded
Savannah, Chicago and Austin experienced mass shootings late Friday and early Saturday, police have said
By Stephanie Pagones | Fox News

Two people were killed and at least 30 more were wounded in separate weekend mass shootings reported in three states, stirring already brewing fears that a spike in gun violence could continue into summer.

The cities of Savannah, Georgia, Chicago and Austin, Texas are the latest to fall victim to mass shootings late Friday and early Saturday, police have said.

The attacks come amid an easing of COVID-19 pandemic restrictions in much of the country, including Chicago, which lifted many of its remaining safeguards on Friday. Many hoped that a spike in U.S. shootings and homicides last year was an aberration perhaps caused by pandemic-related stress amid a rise in gun ownership and debate over policing. But those rates are still higher than they were in pre-pandemic times, including in cities that refused to slash police spending following the death of George Floyd and those that made cuts.

"There was a hope this might simply be a statistical blip that would start to come down," Chuck Wexler, executive director of the Police Executive Research Forum, told The Associated Press. "That hasn’t happened. And that’s what really makes chiefs worry that we may be entering a new period where we will see a reversal of 20 years of declines in these crimes."

This photo provided by Austin Police Department shows Chief Chacon providing an update on overnight shootings in Austin, Texas, early Saturday, June 12, 2021. Chacon says gunfire erupted in a busy entertainment district downtown early Saturday injuring several. (Austin Police Department via AP)

Violent crime typically increases in the summer months. Weekend evenings and early-morning hours also are common windows for shootings.

The Gun Violence Archive, which monitors media and police reports to track gun violence, defines mass shootings as those involving four or more people who were shot, regardless of whether they died. Overall, according to its database, more than 8,700 people have died of gun violence in the U.S. this year.

The GVA also found that mass shootings spiked in 2020 to about 600, which was higher than in any of the previous six years it tracked the statistic. According to this year’s count, there have been at least 267 mass shootings in the U.S. so far, including the latest three overnight Friday into Saturday.

In Savannah, police officials said one man was killed and seven others – including two children – were wounded during a shooting on Friday evening. The wounded children were 18 months old and 13 years old, officials said.

Speaking at a press conference after the shooting, Savannah’s police chief, Roy Minter Jr., said the shooting may be linked to an ongoing dispute between two groups, citing reports of gunshots being fired at the same apartment complex earlier in the week.

Minter Jr. called the rash of gun violence "disturbing and senseless."

"It’s very disturbing what we’re seeing across the country and the level of gun violence that we’re seeing across the country," he told reporters Saturday.

Downtown Austin shooting leaves at least 13 injuredVideo
Then, around 1:30 a.m. Saturday, two gunmen opened fire on a crowded downtown Austin street, wounding 14 people – mostly innocent bystanders, the police department said. Two people were critically injured.

Austin Police arrested one of the suspects shortly thereafter with the help of the U.S. Marshals Lone Star Fugitive Task Force, and were looking for a second.

Interim Police Chief Joseph Chacon said the shooting happened on a street packed with bars and barricaded off from vehicle traffic. He said investigators believe it began as a dispute between two parties. Chacon said both suspects are male, but declined to disclose details such as whether both fired shots, saying the investigation was ongoing.

"Most of the victims were innocent bystanders, but we’re still sorting out all of the victims to see what their involvement is in this case," Chacon said.

Because of the chaos on the barricaded street, police drove six of the wounded to hospitals in their squad cars. Ambulances transported four people and the other four made their own way to hospitals, he said.

One witness, Matt Perlstein, told KXAN-TV that he was waiting with a friend to enter a bar when gunfire erupted.

"Everything was totally fine," Perlstein said, then gunfire erupted. "We just heard like ... a bunch of gunshots going off. Everyone got on the ground. We couldn’t even comprehend what was going on at the time."

Less than an hour later in Chicago, two men opened fire on a group of people on the city’s South Side around 2 a.m., killing one woman and injuring nine others, police have said.

In a brief statement, Chicago Police said around 2 a.m. two men approached a group of people who were on a sidewalk in the Chatham neighborhood on the city’s South Side.

Police said the men opened fire, striking 10 people.

The 29-year-old woman who died was wounded in her abdomen and knee. Her name has not been released. Police said eight men, who ranged in age from 23 to 46, were listed in fair or good condition at Chicago hospitals. A 34-year-old woman also was listed in good condition.

"Let me be clear, these attacks on 75th Street or, anywhere in our communities, are unacceptable," said Roderick Sawyer, the area’s alderman. "We have been working hard to rebuild 75th Street as a thriving business corridor, and the community is committed to this vision."

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

McCloskeys Plead Guilty to Misdemeanor Charges, Forfeit Firearms Used in the Confrontation
By Cristina Laila
Published June 17, 2021 at 2:38pm

Mark and Patricia McCloskey, the St. Louis couple who sought to protect their property and lives from the rabid BLM mob marching down their private street pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges and agreed to forfeit the firearms they used in the showdown last year.

Mark McCloskey spoke to reporters from the courthouse steps on Thursday and said he’d “do it again” to protect his family.

“I’d do it again,” McCloskey said from the courthouse steps. “Any time the mob approaches me, I’ll do what I can to put them in imminent threat of physical injury because that’s what kept them from destroying my house and my family.”

A St. Louis couple who gained notoriety for pointing guns at social justice demonstrators last year pleaded guilty Thursday to misdemeanor charges and agreed to give up the weapons they used during the confrontation.

Patricia McCloskey pleaded guilty to misdemeanor harassment and was fined $2,000. Her husband, Mark McCloskey, pleaded guilty to misdemeanor fourth-degree assault and was fined $750.

The McCloskeys, both of them lawyers in their 60s, wore blue blazers and spoke calmly in answering questions from Judge David Mason during Thursday’s hearing. Mason asked Mark McCloskey if he acknowledged that his actions put people at risk of personal injury. He replied, “I sure did your honor.”

A livestream of the militant mob clearly showed they entered through a gate into a private community.

Mr. McCloskey explained during his on-camera interview last year that he announced to the Marxist mob that they were on private property and that’s when they became enraged.

“Somebody forced the gate, and I stood up and announced that this is private property. Go back. I can’t remember in detail anymore. I went inside, I got a rifle. And when they … because as soon as I said this is private property, those words enraged the crowd,” he said.

McClosky said one of the militants pulled out a loaded pistol magazine and clicked them together and said ‘you’re next.’

“We were threatened with our lives, threatened with a house being burned down, my office building being burned down, even our dog’s life being threatened. It was, it was about as bad as it can get,” McCloskey said.

McCloskey believes that the only thing that stopped the crowd from approaching his home was his rifle.
