Melody

While visiting my hometown I stopped at the local music store to get new piano music.  The owner asked what type of music I was looking for and then recommended a book arranged by one of her favorite composers.  Back home, 900 miles away, I tried playing “Unchained Melody” in my new book.  It sounded horrible.  I tried a few other songs.  They sounded better but not good.  I brought the book to my next piano lesson.  My teacher stated that it was arranged by one of her favorite composers.  She started playing “Unchained Melody” - it was beautiful!  The piece has a lot of accompaniment with a melody line buried in it.  I was playing each note with equal volume.  My teacher subdued the accompaniment and brought out the melody line – what a difference.

My two older boys went on a pioneer trek this week.  For 4 days and 3 nights they pulled heavy handcarts up steep rocky mountain and roughed it with 200 plus youth and 70 leaders.  Yesterday, upon return home, one of my children was full of positive stories, one was full of complaints.  Today they both had positive things to say.  I realized that life is much like my new music – it is much more beautiful when we find and bring out the melody line.

Fishing

I have two memories of fishing from my childhood.  The first is of sitting in a little aluminum boat in the middle of a lake.  No shade and no bathroom (no matter had badly you needed one).  The second is of  sitting on the banks of a lake where there was: lots of sagebrush, lots of insects, lots of heat and lots of "Be quiet or you'll scare the fish," hissed by my oldest brother.  Therefore when my husband and three boys invite me to go fishing with them I conveniently have always had "things to do" at home.

This past Saturday I was again invited to go fishing with the guys.  I really did have A LOT to do at home, but the two younger boys and I had been away for four weeks and I saw benefit in being together as a family so I agreed.  We went to a little pond situated next to a small river - it was beautiful.  As I sat in the shade of the trees and watched my husband and the boys fish I listened to the running water of the river and to the chirping and calling of the birds overhead.  Periodically eagles would swoop down and grab a fish from the pond.

17 year-old J caught his limit of five trout.  12 year-old C was happy with the two he caught.  8-year old B almost caught some and caught three that got away.  He teared up when we said it was time to go.  J asked if he could take B and try one more time.  We agreed.  J baited the hook, cast the line and handed the pole to B.  Within minutes B reeled in a fish and J put it in a net.  We left with 8 trout and 5 happy people.

Next time, when I invite the guys to go fishing, I hope they say yes.
