17-year old planned to ask a girl's varsity soccer player to Homecoming by using plastic drinking cups to spell it out on the girl's soccer field fence.  Underneath would be a dozen yellow roses and a card that read: "I hope your answer is less on the fence than my question was.  Will you please go to Homecoming with me?"  Cute idea, big problem, the girl's field is on Middle School grounds.  17-year old was concerned that the middle school students would knock the cups out if he placed them before school, after school there was not enough time before the girl's soccer game.  I offered to place cups once school was started.  Good thing I did, the initial plan, drawn on paper, did not look good on the fence - the letters needed to be one cup wider and two cups higher.  There were not enough cups.  We no longer have a grocery store in our town so I had to drive to the next town over for more cups.  As I was driving to the store I was feeling grateful that I had the time to help my son.  Suddenly, I remembered being in high school, having left my swim-suit at home and needing it for a meet that day.  Mom was at work.  I called the mom of a friend.  I told her where the hidden key was, where my suit was, where my meet was and asked if she could possibly bring me the suit.  I am embarrassed now that I asked but I am grateful and impressed that she dropped what she was doing and brought the suit to me.
Sparked by the memory, I wrote the mom of my high-school friend thanking her for her specific help and over-all influence in my life.  I didn't know her address so I Googled her name which quickly brought up her address through her county's tax assessor.  Because my dad lives in the same county, I wondered if Googling his name would yield similar results.  It did not.  It did result in a link to my mom's obituary.  I clicked on the link and there was my mom.  I looked at her picture.  I read her bio.  I felt love and gratitude for a woman I can't send a note to.  But, this I know, she continues to be an influence in my life and the life of my children and one day we'll be able to thank her face to face.

$100
5-year old neighbor boy and his 8-year old sister were talking with me while I was painting a different neighbor's house.
Boy, "Are you getting paid for this."
     Me, "Nope."
     Girl, "How come?"
Me, "Because friendship is worth more than money."
     Boy, "Why?"
Me, "If I told you I would give you $100 but you could never play with your friends again, what would you choose?"
     Boy, "$100."
I asked Girl the same question.
     Girl, "Playing with friends."
     Me, "Me too."
Boy, "I changed my mind, I would choose friends.....but why?"
Me, "Because friends are love.  Money comes and goes but friends can last forever.  What would you buy with $100?"
Boy, "First I would get my own pack of gum," long pause, "
The n," shoulder shrug, "I would get some other stuff."
